The Self-defeating Self

A self-defeating personality can keep you from achieving success in life. The self-defeating personality boils down to self-defeating thoughts. Author Anais Nin once wrote, “We don’t see things as they are, we see them as we are.” There lies the root to a self-defeating behavior. While you may consider a negative outcome déjà vu and choose to handle it with a sense of “if I failed the first time around, there is nothing that I can do to change this outcome either,” you should instead accept that there are many things you can do to achieve a favorable outcome. However, if you consider yourself a failure, then you do not want to see things as you think you are. I say “who you think you are” because no one in this world is a “failure.” If you are able to think, you are definitely not a failure. Failure is just a label that you chose to give to yourself for not living up to other people’s expectations. Thus, when dealing with negative outcomes, you must look at it as a challenge to prove that who you think you are will not determine the outcome of your situation. It is important that you do this to break the cycle of self-defeating thoughts that sabotage your ability to succeed and be happy.
